REPENTANCE and FAITH
I learned a great truth once from Dr. Ollila, while listening to him preach on a Sunday morning as a guest speaker in 2014 at the Harvest Baptist Church on Guam. Brother Ollila explained “repentance and faith.” He used the illustration of his journey from Michigan to Guam—he didn't first leave Michigan, and then secondarily decide to come to Guam; but rather, these two things occurred simultaneously (at the same time). So as he was heading toward Guam on the plane, he was also leaving Michigan, at the same time. Likewise, the man who has turned by faith to Jesus Christ as his personal Savior to be saved, has at the same time repented toward God (Acts 20:21b).
I'll also never forget what Brother Ollila did as a second illustration. He looked upward toward God, admitting that he is a guilty sinner (repentance); and then he turned around toward the blessed Savior (faith). I wanted to go up from my pew and hug Brother Ollila in the pulpit, because so many preachers today don't understand repentance and faith, but DR. LES OLLILA GOT IT RIGHT! I cherish those two illustrations.
I Am Set For The Defence Of The Gospel

In a different Sunday sermon by Dr. Ollila, he gave another helpful illustration that I so often think about. He took a Folding Carpenter's Ruler and used it to represent our time here on earth. He folded up a couple segments and said that represents ONE-FOURTH of a person's life; and then he folded a couple more segments and said that was HALF of our years of life spent; and then he folded up some more of the ruler and said in our 50's TWO-THIRDS of our life is over. That impressed upon my heart, because at the time I was 47 years old (I'm 52 now in 2019). My life here on earth is at least TWO-THIRDS over, and Heaven draweth more nigh each and every day that passes! Ephesians 5:16, “Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”
