The Holy Bible Teaches: Once Saved, Always Saved!
by David J. Stewart | November 2016
1st John 5:11, “And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”
The subject of eternal security is a controversial subject, but it is 100% Biblical. My friend, if you don't believe in “ONCE SAVED, ALWAYS SAVED,” you are not saved. It's that simple. The reason why is because if you're trusting Jesus, then you can't lose it. It you think your salvation can be lost, then you are relying upon human effort to keep you saved. This is why I expose the Salvation Army as heretics.
Please notice three things from our text Verse in 1st John 5:11...
- Eternal life is a gift from God.
- It is “eternal life,” that is, it never ends.
- Eternal life is obtained only in Jesus Christ!
Amen! The inspired, precious, inerrant, preserved, holy, King James Bible, teaches that once a person is saved, they can NEVER lose it!!!
Many Baptists are not saved. It is sad but true. I can tell you unequivocally that if you believe you can ever forfeit your salvation, you don't have it friend. Dr. Hank Lindstrom preaches a wonderful MP3 sermon on the subject titled, “How Permanent Is Your Salvation?”
Once you are saved, you have passed from death unto life. John 5:24, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” What a beautiful Scripture teaching eternal security of the believer. There are two types of people in this world: 1) those who believe; 2) those who don't believe. The Bible promises that those who believe have everlasting life. God authored the Gospel of John to convince us that Jesus is the Son of God, the Christ, and that by BELIEVING on His name we will have eternal life. John 20:31, “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”
Eternal Life Cannot Be Given Back to God
I witnessed to a man who is a Seventh-day Adventist. He doesn't believe in eternal security, because Ellen G. White (the founder of SDA) didn't either. He believes that eternal life is a gift that can be given back to God (by lack of faith, apostasy or going back into a life of sin). Such speculation is totally unscriptural. There's not one example in the Holy Bible of anyone ever losing their salvation. In fact, we learn in 1st Corinthians 5:1-5 about a believer in the church at Corinth who was living in sexual immorality. The apostle Paul rebukes the congregation for doing nothing about open sin in the church, and he admonishes them to lovingly confront the man in a Biblical fashion. Paul says if the man doesn't repent, 1st Corinthians 5:5, “To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.” Carefully notice that the man's “spirit” (who we really are) will “be saved” in the Day of the Lord (i.e., when Christ's returns).
The flesh will be destroyed. Romans 6:23 teaches that the wages of sin is death, and we are all big sinners. Therefore, we all must die eventually. But our spirit will return to God when our flesh dies (Ecclesiastes 12:7). The spirit either goes to Hell forever (aka, the Second Death - Revelation 21:8); or our spirit will go to Heaven to be with the Lord (2nd Corinthians 5:8, “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord”). Jesus is precious!!!
Just as the physical birth is irreversible, so also is the spiritual birth irreversible. Many theologians misunderstand this truth.
SDA's deceitfully claim to believe the simple Gospel, but they ALSO believe that the life you live must coincide with your profession of faith to be valid. If any SDA tries to deny this, study their false doctrine of Investigative Judgment for solid evidence of what I say. Miss White taught that in the year 1844, Jesus entered into the heavenly Holy Place to begin His work of investigating the saints, to decide who is worthy to have eternal life or not, based upon the life they have lived. Seventh-day Adventism is a satanic religious cult based upon faith plus works (human performance). SDA's are wrong on repentance. There is no new birth in SDA! They do not believe in eternal security in SDA. Ellen G. White was a false prophetess.
Eternal life is a gift, but it is more than a gift, it is a new birth. And a new birth is irreversible. If human works are required to be saved, then salvation becomes a reward, not a free gift. We read in 1st Peter 1:18-19 that we we're redeemed by the precious blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ. Jesus paid our sin debt with His literal blood. Adding even the slightest bit of human effort corrupts the Gospel and negates Christ's sacrifice ion the cross. This is why God killed a man for picking up sticks on the Sabbath Day in the Old Testament, which symbolized adding works to Christ's finished work of redemption. Man has no part in saving himself. Our only part is to “BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, AND THOU SHALT BE SAVED” (Acts 16:31). Once saved, always saved; Or if you prefer: If Saved, always saved!
If you have any other mindset than that your salvation is 100% secure in Christ's sacrifice on the cross for your sins, His burial, and bodily resurrection from the dead three days later, you need to get saved. If you think there's anything that you could ever do to lose your salvation, you need to get saved! Jesus doesn't forgive sins, He has already paid for them with His precious blood! Forgiveness of sins and eternal life are free gifts, which we need only to receive by faith to have them. John 6:28-29, “Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” We are saved by BELIEVING the Gospel.
The Holy Spirit is the Earnest of Our Inheritance, Which is Eternal Life
Every believer is “sealed” with the Holy Spirit unto the day of redemption:
2nd Corinthians 5:5, “Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.”
And again we read:
Ephesians 1:11-14, “In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”
This “earnest” is evidence that God will do all that He has PROMISED to do. When we get saved, we do not receive all of our inheritance. Our corrupted flesh, with all it's bodily afflictions, does not change. But one day, when we receive all the benefits of salvation, we will get rid of this ole flesh, and receive a brand new glorified body fashioned like unto the Lord's awesome body. Our new body will have SUPERNATURAL POWERS, just like the Lord's resurrected body did:
Philippians 3:20-21, “For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.”
What a glorious day that will be!!!
Please notice that the Bible doesn't place any conditions on the believer's eternal security. If you are a born-again Christian, you are SEALED by the Holy Spirit, unto the DAY OF REDEMPTION. The Bible doesn't say that we are sealed until we sin. The Bible doesn't say that we are sealed until we mess up. The Bible doesn't say that we are sealed until we lose out faith. No, the Bible says, we are sealed UNTO THE DAY OF REDEMPTION!!! God sealed us with the Holy Spirit “OF PROMISE” to guarantee our inheritance. 1st Thessalonians 5:24, “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.” What a great God!!! Those who BELIEVE will never die! Once saved, always saved!!! Thank you Lord Jesus!!!!!!!
The Sad and Tragic Eternal Death of Actor Christopher Reeves
I feel sorry for foolish people who suffer throughout this life, and then they die and go to Hell without Christ in their unbelief. As a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church (a religious cult whose members are 17% atheist), Christopher Reeves rejected Jesus Christ. After spending the latter years of his life restricted to a wheelchair, he died in his sins and went to Hell forever. Mr. Reeve was in Minneapolis October 27, 1996 speaking at the Courage Center, a support organization for the disabled. According to David Peterson's story in the October 29, Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the following exchange took place:
Question: “Do you believe in the Lord?”
Answer: “Even though I don't personally believe in the Lord, I try to behave as though He was watching.”Mr. Peterson writes that the audience responded with, “Huge applause for a moment that was typical for its simplicity and candor.” It breaks my heart every time I think about Christopher Reeves. How sad and tragic! Christopher could have went to Heaven and had eternal life, just for the taking, by simply receiving Christ's sacrifice on the cross as payment for His sins, believing by faith that Christ DIED, was BURIED and BODILY resurrected three days later (1st Corinthians 15:1-6). How about you friend? Will you also reject Jesus Christ as your personal Savior? If you've never received Jesus as your Savior, please do so right now!
Isn't Faith Without Works is Dead?
We read in the epistle of James:
James 2:17-22, “Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?”
Please notice that faith cannot be dead if it doesn't already exist. Can a man's dog be dead if the dog doesn't exist? So in order for a man's faith to be dead, THERE MUST FIRST BE FAITH. In other words, this passage of Scripture is not teaching that you need works to be saved. There is faith. James is talking about a saved man.
God is telling us that our faith will not be effective reaching others for Christ if our walk doesn't coincide with our talk. This is what the Bible means in Hebrews 12:14, “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.”
Romans 4:5-6 Evidences That Salvation Cannot Be Lost
Romans 4:5-6, “But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works. Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.” How can I lose my salvation when God won't even impute my sins to me? Obviously, salvation cannot be lost, for any reason whatsoever!!!
The Holy Bible plainly teaches that we are saved “WITHOUT WORKS.” That means no human effort is required or permitted. The only type of person that God justifies is “THE UNGODLY.” Either a man is saved AS IS in his unreformed state, or he doesn't get saved at all! Many Baptist pastors today completely drop the ball theologically, totally misunderstanding Biblical repentance. Many preachers errantly teach that if a professed Christian still openly embraces sinful behavior, that they're not really saved because they have never repented. Despite a sinner's sincere faith in the Gospel, they are accused of being insincere and lost because they've never turned away from their sins. This is reformation, not Biblical repentance unto the Gospel.
We are saved by BELIEVING, not by repenting. Please don't misunderstand, repentance is necessary for salvation, but to “repent” (Greek noun: metanoia) is a change of mind unto the Gospel itself. Repentance is not a change of character. A changed life is the “FRUIT” of the indwelling Holy Spirit (Galatians 2:20), and not a part of saving repentance unto faith. God changes a man, not manmade repentance. A man's faith is counted (imputed) for righteousness, so that no human effort is required or allowed. Turning from sinful behavior is a work. Some pastors say it is not, because they do not understand true repentance unto the Gospel itself. A changed life is the “fruit” of the indwelling Holy Spirit, and not a result of manmade repentance from sins. You won't find the phrases “repent from sin” or “turn from sin” in the Word of God. Acts 20:21 teaches “repentance toward God” (Please read: “EXCEPT YE REPENT,” an excellent book by Pastor Harry Ironside, 1876-1951).
Matthew 7:21-23 is Often Misinterpreted to Deny Eternal Security
In an attempt to deny the eternal security of the believer, on page 1197 of THE EVIDENCE BIBLE, Ray Comfort comments on Matthew 7:22-23...
“These are perhaps the most frightening verses in the Bible. Vast multitudes of professing Christians fit into the category spoken of here. They call Jesus 'Lord,' but they practice lawlessness. They profess faith in Jesus, but have no regard for the divine law. They tell 'fibs' or 'white' lies, take things that belong to others, have a roaming eye for the opposite sex, etc. They are liars, thieves, and adulterers at heart, who will be cast from the gates of heaven into the jaws of hell.”
SOURCE: THE EVIDENCE BIBLE, by Ray Comfort, pg. 1197; 2003, Bridge-Logos Publishers, Orlando, Florida
Ladies and gentleman, Ray Comfort is teaching works salvation! According to what we just read by Ray Comfort, every believer who willingly allows sin in their life won't be allowed into Heaven. Mr. Comfort is teaching that you cannot get to Heaven unless you make an effort to stop sinning. This is a works-based mindset and a false Gospel. John MacArthur, Bill Graham and Paul Washer all misinterpret this Bible passage in Matthew 7:21-23, assuming that turning away from sinful behavior is required to be saved. This is not what the Bible is teaching.
We are saved by DOING GOD'S WILL. This is what Jesus said in Matthew 7:21, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.” We find a precious passage of Scripture in John, which tells us the Father's will. God's “will” simply means to “do what God wants us to do.” John 6:39-40, “And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” Carefully notice that Jesus said it is the Father's will that “I SHOULD LOSE NOTHING”! My friend, you cannot lose God's salvation!!!
Please read the excellent book by Michael P. Bowen, “I NEVER KNEW YOU: THE COMING GREAT WHITE THRONE AND HOW TO AVOID IT!” (.pdf book). Here's an excerpt from the book.
What About Hebrews 6:4-7?
Many proponents of losing one's salvation attempt to wrestle Hebrews 6:4-6:
Hebrews 6:4-7, “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.”
If the preceding passage were teaching that salvation could be lost, it would have to mean that they could never have a second chance. The proponents of losing salvation that I have met, believe that you can enter in and out of a state of salvation. This is what the Salvation Army believes. They call salvation a “state.” My friend, salvation is not a state in which you can move in and out; but rather, salvation is a new birth, where a man is born anew by the Holy Spirit into the family of God. Jesus exclaimed, “YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN”!!! (John 3:3-7). All Christ-rejecters will be burned in the fires of Hell for eternity!
The Bible doesn't say they got saved, it says they “tasted of the heavenly gift” and were enlightened. This passage is talking about a person who hears the Gospel, the Holy Spirit is working in their heart, and they grasp the Gospel, but they reject it! Many people taste of the heavenly gift of eternal life, yet don't want it. John 3:20 tells us one reason why, “For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.” Another reason is fear of what others will think (Revelation 21:8a, “But the fearful...”). When the Holy Spirit illuminates someone, and they reject the glorious light of the Gospel, many times they never get another opportunity to get saved.
Hebrews 6:4-7 is simply teaching us that if a person is not saved, and God is convicting their heart about getting saved, now is the time to get saved, because you never know when it will be too late! Although a person can receive Christ at will, they won't do so unless the Holy Spirit is convicting their heart about sin, righteousness and judgment (John 16:8)—About sin, because we are guilty sinners in God's sight; About righteousness, because we have none to offer God, and to be saved we need the imputed righteousness of God, which is through faith (Philippians 3:9); About judgment, because the wages of sin is death, and all Christ-rejecters will be punished forever in the fires of Hell. Today could be the last chance you'll ever get to trust the Lord. You and I could be dead by sundown!!! 2nd Corinthians 6:2, “For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”
Every believer is safe in the everlasting arms of the Father. Deuteronomy 33:27, “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.” Amen, if you are saved, you are eternally secure in the arms of the Father. How could you ever lose, that which was not yours to give in the first place? In the belly of the whale, the prophet Jonah realized in Jonah 2:9, “SALVATION IS OF THE LORD”! Either God does all the saving, or you don't go to Heaven. Salvation is not doing your best, it is having Christ's best put to your account through receiving Him by faith. God will not save anyone who is trying to be saved, He will only save those who are trusting to be saved.
Also, here is a great sermon by Pastor Steven Anderson titled, “Once Saved Always Saved.” I listened along to Brother Anderson's awesome sermon as I typed out this article. It has lots of helpful Biblical information.
Note: Kindly, I love Brother Anderson and endorse his ministry, although we disagree on the timing of the Rapture. I don't say these things to criticize Brother Anderson; but rather, to make sure that my web visitors know where I stand on the issues. I thank God for any man of God who stands for THE TRUTH! I also don't agree with Pastor Anderson's doctrinal position that God has given up on homosexuals ever getting saved. The Bible says God gave them over to sin, it doesn't say that God gave up on them. Please see: God Loves All People—And We're All Sinners! (God agapes all men, but He doesn't phileo all men). Albeit, Brother Anderson is 100% correct on the Gospel, the Word of God, and the evils of manmade Israel. I also don't believe that Jesus went to burn in Hell when He died. The Lord went to Hades (a compartmentalized place with Paradise on one side and Torment on the other. Jesus told the repentant thief on the cross that they would be in Paradise. For an excellent work explaining the subject, please see: “A Biblical Examination Of Hell,” a free pdf. book by Dr. Max D. Younce).
